Trauma Focused Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT)
GCC also has therapists trained in Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT). TFCBT is an evidence-based treatment approach shown to help children, adolescents, and their parents (or other caregivers) overcome trauma-related difficulties, including child maltreatment. TF-CBT helps children address distorted or upsetting beliefs and attributions and learn skills to help them cope with ordinary life stressors. It also helps parents who were not abusive to cope effectively with their own emotional distress and develop skills that support their children. This factsheet is intended to help child welfare professionals build a better understanding of TF-CBT, including which clients should be referred for this approach, how it is implemented, and resources for additional information.
What to Expect
The therapist will see the client/family weekly to provide therapy sessions. Sessions can take place in-home, in the community, through video, or in-office settings. Individuals in crisis can be seen up for 2x/week through Medicaid if needed. Therapy can also be funded as private pay, grants, or CORE/DHS funding. The therapist will develop a treatment plan with measurable goals to support the client/family with progress. The therapist will maintain communication and collaboration with the professional team to provide updates on treatment goals, treatment progress, and safety concerns.
